Billabong Pro Mundaka: The Return of the Sand Bar
After almost a year after dredging which inadvertently destroyed the break, and required the postponement of last years Billabong Pro, the famous left-hander Mundaka has come back with vengeance. Two weeks before the start of the tenth event of the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour, Mundaka produced some of the thickest and heaviest waves in the history of the break.
Mundaka, Spain is situated in the heart of the Basque country in Spain’s northern-most coastal province a few miles south of the border with France. A picturesque Basque fishing village of quaint cobblestone streets, and a church that overlooks the break, Mundaka is just a stone’s throw from the renowned Basque town Guernica, where Picasso painted one of his most famous masterpieces of Nazi atrocities during WWII.
When all the conditions are right, Mundaka is one of the premiere left-hand rivermouth sandbars and perhaps one of the top 10 waves in the world. Situated on the Bay of Biscay, it catches all of the huge Aleutian swells that come sweeping out of the North Sea.
Last week an early season swell really showed Mundaka’s teeth, with waves that even had the locals pulling back. On the biggest day Mundaka broke on both the high and low tides, which is rare as normally it only works at low tide. If there is another strong swell in the waiting period that lasts 4 days, the entire draw will be run without stopping.
The Billabong Pro Mundaka will start October 3rd to 14th. It will be LIVE on www.billabongpro.com
The 2006 Billabong Pro Mundaka is supported by Von Zipper, Kustom, Yamaha/Cobra, Bose, Powerade, the Mundaka and Bakio Surf Clubs and the cities of Mundaka and Bakio.
