DAY TWO OF THE 2006 NEWPORT BEACH PRO PRESENTED BY JEEP. Solid Waves and Clear Skies Make for Great Competition-
Newport Beach, Calif.September 20, 2006- It was a day full of hollow barrels and aggressive surfing during the second day of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) two-star 2006 Newport Beach Pro Presented by Jeep. Top-level professionals and up-and-coming surfers are competing for a $25,000 prize purse and the chance for critical World Qualifying Series (WQS) points. All of todays action leads up to tomorrow's early afternoon heat at 1:40p.m.which includes the 2006 Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep points leader Dustin Cuizon (HAW). The pressure is on for Cuizon, who is currently ranked 19th on the WQS, to win the Newport Pro in order to stay on top of the points leader board and get one step closer to the $33,333 prize bonus for winning all three Trifecta events, the Body Glove Surfbout presented by Adio, the Newport Pro presented by Jeep and the O'Neill Coldwater Classic presented by Jeep. The live webcast of the 2006 Newport Pro began today on www.NewportBeachPro.com and will continue to be available for the duration of the contest through Sunday.
In contrast to yesterday morning, the wind was calm and the wave conditions clean. Surfers were able to connect multiple maneuvers and collect higher scoring wave points. In heat 14 of the round of 128, Granger Larson (Lahaina, HAW) scored a solid 6.75 on his first wave putting the pressure on fellow competitors Max Doucet (Satellite Beach, FL), Eddie Lester (Seal Beach, CA) and Ryland McCart (Melbourne Beach, CA). After Granger scored a 4.35, the competition was for second place. Max and Eddie both posted lower scores throughout the heat but in the last few minutes, Max fought for second and caught a left, executed a huge floater and two big turns earning him a score 5.5. But it was Eddie who responded in the last two minutes of the heat with a solid 6.0 wave that secured him second place sending him to the round of 96.
"There is a crossing northwest swell that is making these waves peak better," said event director Darren Brillhart. "Yesterday the waves were just walling up but today they were cleaner and more contestable."
By mid-morning the tide came in, the swell continued to build and the surfing only got better. The round of 96 began with back-to-back crowd pleasing heats. Heat one showcased astounding runs from Flynn Novak (Haleiwa, HAW) and Tom Rezvan (Huntington Beach, CA). Both surfers gave exciting performances earning cheers from the crowd. The wave of the day went to heat two winner Adam Virs (Ventura, CA) who pulled into a deep barrel, came out and continued the wave earning himself a 9.0, the highest scoring wave of the contest far. "I thought that the wave was going to pitch and I was going to see the ocean bottom, then I shockingly got barreled!" said Adam. "The waves are great and the water is warm, you can't ask for anything more."
The over-head wave conditions enabled Justin McBride to pull off a huge forehand air in the last five minutes of heat six, bumping him from fourth to second and into the round of 64. The next to last heat of the day included Nick Kovack (Encinitas, CA), Newport Pro champion from three years ago, who received an alternate slot to surf in the contest. Nick won his heat hands down and proved to everyone that he is a threat and back with vengeance to win this years title.
The Newport Pro will return to a full day of action tomorrow with heats starting 8:00 a.m. and running until 4:00 p.m., with the conclusion of the round of 96 and the entire round of 64. Look for top level professional surfers Asher Nolan, Mike Todd, Gabe Kling, as well as up-and comers, Eric Geiselman, Nathaniel Curran, and Patrick Gudauskas to be in on the beach competing for a spot in the finals of the 2006 Newport Pro presented by Jeep.
The Newport Pro is the second stop on the Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series. The Trifecta was formed in 2005 as part of a three-year plan to strengthen surfing in America by uniting the Body Glove Surfbout presented by Adio, the Newport Pro presented by Jeep and the O'neill Coldwater Classic under one banner. The Trifecta will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer that takes first-place in all three events. Should no one surfer take the win in all three events, the Trifecta also awards an overall points-winner bonus of $10,000.
As a part of the ASP North American tour, the 2006 Newport Pro is supported by Jeep Brand, Oakley Eyewear, Macy's West, Amp'd Mobile and Jack's. The Newport Pro presented by Jeep is pleased to have media support from PRIMEDIA's Action Sports Group (ASG), publisher of SURFER, SURFING and Wavewatch, as well as FUEL TV, the action sports lifestyle network. For those who can't make it, this year's contest will be available to view online with streaming video and live scoring starting tomorrow, September 20th at www.NewportBeachPro.com
