Amp'd Mobile to Broadcast Semis and Finals of the Newport Beach Pro and the Oakley Pro Junior Live to Amp'd Mobile Phones-

Newport Beach, Calif.September 23, 2006It was all about good weather, great surf and tough competition on day five of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) two-star 2006 Newport Beach Pro Presented by Jeep. All eyes were focused on Hawaiian Dustin Cuizon, currently ranked 19th on the World Qualifying Series Tour (WQS) who dominated the quarter-finals, closing in on the Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep title and the $33,333 prize purse. The top American professional junior competitors were on fire during the ASP Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior quarter-finals as they battled for vital points toward a coveted spot in the Billabong Pro Junior World Championships. In addition to the WQS and Pro Junior events, 144 amateur surfers took to the beach for the 18th Annual Newport Beach Surfing Championships.

Laguna Beach's Mike Todd charged through the first WQS heat of the day. "I'm nervous, there are a lot of good surfers here," said Todd after the win. "My 8.0 at the beginning of the heat took a little pressure off and luckily I got a few solid back-up waves." Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) was in rhythm throughout his tough heat against Dane Reynolds (Ventura,CA), Adam Virs (Ventura, CA) and Dustin Barca. Yeomans dominated, scoring the highest heat total of the event with an 8.25 and a 9.0. "That heat felt like a finalit was definitely a confidence booster," said Yeomans. "You have to be patient and wait for those waves, then surf them the best you can."

Cuizon once again breezed through his heat with a 7.5 wave score that generated applause from the crowd. "I felt lucky. I sat near the jetty and waited for the waves to come to me and I just linked them up," said Cuizon. In his response to the added pressure the Trifecta Cuizon replied, "I try not to think about it. I just concentrate on one heat at a time." Cuizon will surf tomorrow in the second semi-final heat along side 2005 Newport Classic winner Nathaniel Curran (Oxnard, CA), Florida's Jeremy Johnston and Venezuelan transplant Magnum Martinez.

The Oakley Pro Junior quarter-finals were stacked with talent and proved to be some of the most exciting heats of the day. Adam Wickwire (Satellite Beach, FL) moved on to the semis but not before he air dropped off the top of a wave and broke his brand new board while trying to do a tailslide in last five minutes of his heat. Killian Garland (Orcutt, CA) had his heat on lockdown with a huge frontside air. "I'm feeling good...I was just trying to choose the waves to get me through the heat," said Garland. Kona's Casey Brown, was unable to advance to the semi-finals of the Newport Beach Pro earlier in the day, but redeemed himself with a second place finish in his Oakley Pro Junior heat.

Each of these under 20 year old surfers is vying for needed points toward the current junior professional rankings. With only the Oakley Pro Junior National Championships at the O'Neill Cold Water Classic remaining, a top finish at this contest is imperative if they want to qualify for the World Junior Championships.

The 18th Annual Newport Beach Surfing Championships started the day with the opening rounds of the Open Men's, High School, Middle School and Elementary School divisions. Kaleigh Gildchrist, the only girl to surf in the middle school category, showed the boys she meant business, as she blew through the competition on onto tomorrow's final. Thirteen year old Andrew Doheny surfed in the Newport Pro, the Oakley Pro Junior and today took on the Middle School division advancing with Gildchrist to the final. The Elementary School competitors threw caution to the wind and went for it on every set that came through, treating spectators to the most entertaining heats of the day. Tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. the 18th Annual Newport Beach Surfing Championships continue with round one of the Masters, Legends divisions and the finals of the Open Men's, Elementary, Middle School, High School and Open Women's divisions. The Newport Beach Pro presented by Jeep and the Oakley Pro Junior will commence Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with the semis and finals of both events. Live scoring and press updates of both events are available at www.newportbeachpro.com and www.surfermag.com/events/oakleyjr06.

On Sunday September 24, Amp'd Mobile will broadcast the semi-final and final rounds of the Newport Beach Pro and the Oakley Pro Junior live to Amp'd Mobile phones. Please visit www.ampd.com for more information.

The Newport Pro is the second stop on the Macy's California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep. The Trifecta was formed in 2005 as part of a three-year plan to strengthen surfing in America by uniting the Body Glove Surfbout presented by Adio, the Newport Pro presented by Jeep and the O'Neill Cold Water Classic presented by Jeep under one banner. The Trifecta will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer that takes first-place in all three events. Should no one surfer take the win in all three events, the Trifecta also awards an overall points-winner bonus of $10,000.
