CARDIFF, Calif. (Sunday, September 24, 2006) – Lindsay Steinriede (Dana Point, Calif.) took the title at the first ever Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America-sanctioned Roxy Jam Cardiff featuring the Linda Benson Women’s Longboard Pro in Cardiff-by-the-Sea in front of the full capacity crowd at Cardiff Reef.

The Roxy Jam Cardiff featuring the Linda Benson Women’s Longboard Pro, was treated to a phenomenal exhibition of the new caliber of talent within the female professional longBoarding.netmunity as 80 competitors tackled the peaks over the weekend.

Steinriede’s abilities, which have been heralded in the amateur ranks for several years, were validated today as she capped off an excellent season with the biggest professional win of her young career.

“This season, I was fortunate enough to take out the Corona event in Hawaii and then I got second in the event in Huntington (Beach), but this is by far my biggest win ever,” Steinreide said. “This has to be the biggest event of the season and I’m so stoked with this win because I wasn’t able to go to France to compete so I’m happy I did well here.”

The young natural-footer built momentum throughout the event securing her two heat-winning waves within the first five minutes of the final.

“I was happy just to be seeded in round three – there are just so many good girls in this event,” Steinreide said. “I was stoked to make the quarters and I was stoked to make the semis and when I got to the finals, I was just more relieved. I think I built up a little bit of momentum and I caught those two 6.75’s right off the bat and they won the heat for me.”

Steinriede, who is now guaranteed a spot in next year’s Roxy ASP Women’s World Longboard Championships in Biarritz, France, will now have the opportunity to further establish herself on the international stage.

Cori Schumacher (Carlsbad, Calif.), finishing runner-up, surfed brilliantly throughout the event but her local knowledge wasn’t enough to secure a win in the final.

“I did everything I could out there in the final but just couldn’t find the scores,” Schumacher said. “Lindsay (Steinriede) got those two good scores right at the beginning and nothing really manifested for the rest of us.”

Jennifer Smith (San Diego, Calif.), Roxy teamrider and runner-up at the Roxy ASP Women’s World Championships in France last July, won the $3000 (USD) for the noseriding contest sponsored by Hansen’s Surfboards (Encinita, Calif.). Smith also secured the event-high heat total of a 17.90 out of a possible 20 in her semifinal heat but was unable to repeat in the finals, finishing third overall.

“I’m afraid I peaked a bit too early in the semifinal,” Smith said. “The conditions were much harder during the final than the semifinal. I was able to pick off some good scores during the semis, but couldn’t find them in the finals. Congrats to Lindsay (Steinriede) though – she’s an awesome talent.”

Schuyler McFerran (Encinitas, Calif.), current ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion, and perennial threats Kassia Meador (Encinitas, Calif.) and Daize Shane (Costa Mesa, Calif.) were surprise eliminations today as they bowed out of the event before the semifinals.

As the first ASP-sanctioned women’s longboard event, The Roxy Jam Cardiff featuring the Linda Benson Pro was a resounding success honoring the veteran competitors of past seasons and showcasing the fresh crop of prodigious up-and-comers.

“Thank you to Cardiff Reef for giving us great waves and a spectacular event,” said Linda Benson. “I could not be any happier with the turnout of athletes and fans and the support from the community here in San Diego. I also want to thank Randy Hild and Roxy for the vision of taking women’s longboarding into the future.”

“This is the first ASP-sanctioned women’s longboard event and this was truly history in the making,” Randy Hild (Senior VP of Marketing for Roxy) said. “It is a phenomenal step for women’s surfing and we here at Roxy couldn’t be more proud to be a part of it.”

The ASP Women’s World Longboard Tour has wrapped for 2006, but the next stop on the ASP North America tour will be the No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta in San Miguel, Mexico from October 13-15, 2006.

The amateur division, which ran in conjunction with the ASP division, saw winners from five separate divisions walk away with a Surftech surfboard and a Roxy prize package.
