ARICA, Chile (Wednesday, June 20, 2007) – The first heat of official Foster’s ASP World Tour action in Chile is underway in Arica. Heat 1 of Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro Search Chile features Bobby Martinez (USA), Ricky Basnett (ZAF) and Troy Brooks (AUS) contesting four to six foot (one to two metre) waves at Ex-Isla Alacran.
Competition began at 7:30 local time and heats are 30 minutes in duration. Contest officials will endeavor to get through as many heats as possible each day before unfavorable winds set in – something that occurs almost daily by mid-afternoon.
Heats 5 through 10 feature top seeded surfers Damien Hobgood (USA), Joel Parkinson (AUS), Andy Irons (HAW), Mick Fanning (AUS), Kelly Slater (USA) and Taj Burrow (AUS) in that order.
Heat 13 is an all South African affair with Travis Logie, Greg Emslie and Royden Bryson each looking to avoid having to surf Round 2.
