GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Wednesday, August 8, 2012) – The ASP 1-Star Men’s and Women’s Airlwalk Lacanau Pro Junior, last event on the European Pro Junior season will start this Friday, August 10, 2012. The iconic French Pro, comprised of the Sooruz Lacanau Pro and it’s Pro Junior variant, returns in 2012 and will welcome more than 200 surfers during the ten-days waiting period covering both events.
The entertainment will start on Friday with the first day of the Pro Junior that will decide this year’s European Men’s Junior Champion. Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) and Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) are the last two surfers able to clinch the Title and competition will be tough for the young Portuguese who needs a win or a second place to overtake Boukhiam on the rankings.
“This year’s Title race has been amazing so far and promises to keep everyone on their toes in the last event of the season in Lacanau”, Rob Gunning, ASP Europe Tour Manager stated. “The season started with a three-star event in the Canary Islands that gave us the frontrunners in the race, but was kept interesting with the adding of the inaugural event in Galicia last week, in which Ramzi Boukhiam seized the opportunity to claim the event title and the rankings pole position.”
Ramzi Boukhiam now faces a difficult situation in Lacanau, where he won’t be able to better his three best results count, and will have to sit tight and watch Ribeiro’s progress in the event to find out if he can hang on to this first place on the rankings synonym of the Regional Title crowning.
In the women’s division, the European Title has already been awarded to Cannelle Bulard (REU) but the girls will take on the Lacanau beachbreaks for a final chance of claiming an event win and Maud Le Car (FRA) fresh off a first place in Galicia will be a strong contender to count on.
When the Pro Junior event ends, it will be time for some of the World’s Best to enter the arena of La Grande Plage in Lacanau for the ASP 5-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro. Big names are once again patiently awaited by the summer Lacanau crowds including ASP Men’s World Rankings leader Glenn Hall (IRL) and most of the Top 10 who will be out reaching for crucial ranking points and a piece of the $130,000 prize-money on offer.
“Going to Lacanau is always fun with the opportunity to get some good waves. Sooruz are sponsoring the event and it is a big part of the European tour. I?m excited to go there as I am every year. I stay with all the Sooruz guys and I?m relaxed and my wife and baby are with me. You kind of have a little party each night and try to get to bed early each night. Sooruz put on a really fun event and I think that is why we enjoy it so much.”
The Irish ambassador and Sooruz Team member has had a incredible season so far with a second place in the ASP Prime Nike Lowers Pro and a win in the recent ASP Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito along with other excellent results that allow him to come in as the number one seeded surfer in this event.
Lacanau now prepares to breathe and live surf for the next week and a half, and besides the great entertainment provided by the highest standards of performance in the surf events, tourists and regionals alike will enjoy a musical festival with free concerts every night and various activities on the event’s site.
