FISTRAL BEACH, Newquay/England (Wednesday, August 8, 2012) ? The Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters in association with Vans ploughed through three rounds of competition in a marathon day of competition in punchy 3ft peaks at the main break of Fistral beach to leave twelve surfers in contention for this year?s title. Filipe Toledo (BRA) 17, led the charge with a brilliant display of aerial surfing mixed with power and speed manoeuvres. Event officials ran split banks during the morning session to place the event in a position to possibly crown the 2012 Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans Champion tomorrow.
The ASP 6-Star Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans is the first event of a string of ASP Star competitions set to run over the coming weeks. Surfers are out to gain crucial world ranking points in their campaigns to qualify for the elite 34-man ASP World Tour.
Toledo, currently 34th on the ASP World Rankings, was in hot form dominating all three of his performances today to advance easily through to Round Five of competition. Toledo is stamping his name in the group of young Brazilian talent reaching the elite level of professional surfing and pulled the aerial of the event combined with a powerful smash to claim a 9.83 out of 10, the highest single-wave score of the event.
?I got one of the bigger sets of the day and I did a really good first turn and then a little one and a huge air reverse on my backhand and they gave me a 9.83. Now on the low tide I think it is better and I am pretty stoked.?
Toledo?s results so far have shown his dominance by achieving the two highest heat totals of the event. Fresh from a recent excellent result in the US, Toledo is gaining momentum and is surfing with confidence as the rounds move forward.
?I?m feeling good and I want to try and get as many points as possible to get on the World Tour. After the US Open I moved up the ranking so I am close and now I want to get the huge points to make the Tour.?
?I got a really good result in the US Open,? continued Toledo. ?I made it through to the quarters. Now I try to do my best in this comp and I am relaxed at the moment here. My board is working really well so let?s get on with the next rounds.?
Top seed, Glenn Hall (IRL) 30, survived a close low-scoring tussle to keep his campaign alive at the Relentless Boardmasters in assoc. with Vans to advance along with Sebastien Zietz (HAW). It came down to the final minutes of the heat before Hall marked his authority with a series of his trademark backhand snaps on a long right to receive a solid 6.50 out of 10.
?It wasn?t really an awesome performance but I?m stoked to make it. It was a low scoring heat and everyone was in the same score bracket so it was close at the end and anything could have happened.?
Hall is currently sitting in 16th position on the ASP world rankings and is in the box seat to qualify for next year?s elite ASP World Tour. Hall comments on his chances leading into the second half of the year.
?It is exciting to think about it but it there is a long way to go and I?m not going to sit back and think I?ve qualified even if i have. I want to go through with the best seed I can get. In Hawaii you never know what can happen and you have to finish the job with all the work to be done.?
Medi Veminardi (REU) 20, came out on top in a stacked heat ahead of former Boardmasters Champion Wiggolly Dantas (BRA). Veminardi, current ASP Europe Junior title holder is making the most of his wildcard in all the Star events held in Europe. Hungry to go up against the world?s best, Veminardi has started off with a guaranteed 9th place in Newquay.
?Every time I come here I surf well and I make some heats and I hope I can keep it like that. My goal was to focus on the juniors last year and maybe it wasn?t a good idea because this year I have no ranking and I have to start from the bottom when I am overseas. I am happy to do well in Europe and to use my wildcard. I am just going to try and do my best on the 6-Stars and hopefully I can get a good ranking to get into the Primes next year.?
Fellow countryman Vincent Duvignac (FRA) 24, joined Veminardi in Round Five thanks to his powerful committed surfing in the late afternoon session. Duvignac showed his natural ability and tactical prowess to hold at bay the late challenges thrown down by his opponents.
?That was good and I am super happy. Every heat means a lot to me. I think the other surfers were a little bit lost our there because of the tide coming in so I got together the good ones and I did my job.?
Tomorrow 9th August will see the crowning of the Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters in association with Vans and Boardmasters Longboard Pro Champions. A first call will be made at 8.30 am for a possible 9.00 am start with Round Five of the ASP 6-Star event to kick off proceedings.
