LOBITOS, Piura / Peru (Wednesday, Jul, 25, 2012) - Waves with sets in the 2-3 foot range (1 meter) were on hand at the lefthand pointbreak of Lobitos, in Piura, Peru, however, with the forecast showing a swell increase in the upcoming days, event organizers decided to call a lay day for today (Wednesday) at the ASP 6-Star Movistar Women’s Pro presented by Rip Curl and Petrolera Sapet.
ASP South America’s Regional Director, Roberto Perdigão, gave some more insight on the decision.
?The ocean conditions in Lobitos today (Wednesday) are still good with shoulder-high sets, but a significant increase in swell size is predicted for tomorrow coming in from the South/Southwest,? said Roberto Perdigão. ?We thought it would be better to hold off the event until Thursday to start the next Round of competition. With an increase in size, we’ll have excellent conditions for the ASP Women’s Star event in Peru. We’re planning on completing twelve heats of the Round of 48 tomorrow (Thursday). Each heat will last 30 minutes and it’s sure to be going off since the event includes a great number of ASP World Star and WCT athletes as well.?
The Movistar Women’s Pro event will be a deciding factor in the race for qualification into the 2013 ASP Women’s World Tour. The top 16 surfers will qualify to compete at the elite level next year.
The next call is set for 8am local time on Thursday at Lobitos for the start of the Round of 48. Heat 1 will see Justine Dupont (FRA), Ornella Pellizarri (ARG), Yusbelki Aldana Herrera (VNZ) and Alessa Quizon (HAW) facing each other.
