Casey Grant will be one South African in the draw at this year’s ASP 6-Star Billabong Pro J Bay.
JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa – The current U20 and Open Men’s South African champions are both entered into the Billabong Pro J-Bay, set to take place at Supertubes 10-15 July. The contest is a 6 Star Men’s event on the ASP World Tour.
The event has a maximum field of 144 surfers. Due to the oversubscribed entries, there have been a number of competitors waiting on the side for possible injuries and cancellations in order to get a spot into the event. Two such surfers are South African U20 Champion Mikey February from Kommetjie and Open Men’s Champion Casey Grant from Scottburgh. Both have subsequently been awarded entries into this prestigious event.
“I’m stoked to get a slot into the event,” said Casey on hearing his inclusion. “I really hope we get some pumping surf for the event. I have a bunch of new boards that are going good, and I have been surfing a lot on the coast, so I am feeling fit and confident for the event.”
There are also 11 surfers out of the top 34 surfers from the World Championship Tour entered into the event, including Adriano de Souza, Pat Gudauskas, CJ and Damien Hobgood, Brett Simpson, Travis Logie and Jordy Smith.
The wildcard names are to be announced shortly. They will consist of two Billabong wildcards, two ASP Africa wildcards, and one each from the local clubs J-Bay Boardriders and JBU.
Billabong Pro J-Bay event co-sponsors include: Monster Energy, Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Carling Black Label, Sony Xperia, Nissan, Vida e Caffe, VonZipper and Nixon.
In conjunction with the Billabong Pro J-Bay there will also be the 5FM Music Festival driven by Nissan Juke on the weekend of 13th – 15th July.
