SUNSET BEACH, Oahu/Hawaii (Saturday, January 18, 2014) - Sunset Beach delivered beautiful 8 – 10 foot surf at the North Shore Surf Shop Pro Junior presented by Da Hui as the next generation of international surfing attacked the giant surf with wild abandon. Before the sun was up there were 50 of the world’s best junior surfers charging 10 – 12 foot sunset. There were broken boards and leashes, kids falling out of the sky, big carving turns and tube rides. It looked like a warm up for the Triple Crown but it was really the beginning of a very special day in surfing history.

The Pro Junior events at Sunset and Pipeline will now set the barometer of who the best young surfers are in the world. There was a solid group of Hawaiian performers during today’s action. Kalani David and Makai Mcnamara both surfed really well in the big conditions, laying down big turns on the critical parts of the wave. Seth and Josh Moniz also surfed really well and they will both be moving on to the round of 32. Joey Johnston was another standout from Hawaii sticking one of the biggest closeout off the lips of the day. Barron Mamiya was the youngest of the Hawaiian’s to advance through his heat, showing maturity at the young age of 13.

The crew from California also surfed well in the big conditions. Griffin Colapinto put on an incredible performance scoring two 8-point rides during his heat to take the win and advance to the next round. Colapinto and counterpart Jake Marshall are only 15 years old and both advanced through their heats showing impressive maturity at such a young age. Taylor Clark and Nic Hdez are slightly older and stronger and both surfed solid, showing they are unafraid of the big conditions and ready to take their surfing to the next level. Peruvian Lucca Saldivar had one of the highest scores of the day and will be moving on with fellow countrymen Miguel Tudela.

The swell forecast still looks very promising and there is a good possibility the final day could be this coming Tuesday the 21st of January.
