SYDNEY (Thursday, 16 January 2014) - The Carve Pro Junior and Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage will make their joint debut this weekend when the three day competition kicks off at Maroubra Beach this Friday.
Over 120 competitors are expected to compete in the two events, which will see some of Australia’s best junior surfers fighting for valuable ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series points in the Carve Pro Junior, while some of Australia’s most promising under-16s will duke it out in the Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage.
A handful of local surfers will be going into the events as hot favourites in both events. Already entered are 2013 NSW State Junior Champion and Australian Junior Title runner-up Monty Tait; winner of the 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch National Final Jackson Giles; 2013 Under-13 Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage champion Max McGuigan and Surfing NSW wildcard Jake Scott.
After finishing 2013 with back-to-back wins in the Rip Curl GromSearch on the Sunshine Coast and the 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch National Final, Jackson Giles is looking forward to kicking off 2014 with the Carve Pro Junior on home turf.
“This should be a really good event,” said Giles. “It’s always good surfing at home as you get a lot of local support and they really get behind you. There’s a bunch of young Maroubra surfers who are showing a lot of talent at the moment so hopefully we can put on a bit of a show and do as well as we can. I know we’re all really excited to surf that’s for sure.”
Last year, the Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage series was fine-tuned and compressed into an elite event that ran at Maroubra during the Christmas school holidays. 2014 will be no different and looks set to see some of Australia’s most promising junior surfers fighting for the prestigious event titles.
“We’re overjoyed by the fact Carve have come to the party and will host a Pro Junior alongside the Teenage Rampage event,” said Ocean and Earth spokesman and former ASP World Championship Tour surfer Phil MacDonald. “The ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series is something that provides Aussie junior surfers with the perfect pathway towards the World Championship Tour and we are stoked to be affiliated with the series for this event.”
Dane Jordan, ASP Australasia General Manager is thrilled to have the support of Carve to help grow the ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series, and the career pathway for aspiring young professional surfers in the Asia Pacific region.
“I just want to give a massive thanks to Carve and Ocean and Earth for making this event happen,” Jordan said. “We’ve already had one event on this year’s ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series and it’s exciting to see the performance level of these surfers. The Carve Pro Junior will be an important event for anyone vying for the prestigious ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series Championship, and it’s great that it’s held at one of Australia’s most iconic beaches, Maroubra.”
The event will also host a variety of local market stalls and live music.
