Taj Burrow (AUS), 34, warming up at Supertubos for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Friday, October 12, 2012) – Event organizers have placed the Rip Curl Pro Portugal ON HOLD this morning until 12pm, when they will reassess conditions and make another call then.
Event No. 8 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal is a crucial stop for both the hunt for the 2012 ASP World Title as well as the requalification campaigns of the world’s best surfers.
“Surf is still small this morning but there’s an outside chance that something may move in this afternoon,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “We want to make the most of the conditions we have available to us and if this afternoon has solid surf, we’ll get competition underway.”
Event organizers will reconvene at noon to reassess conditions for a possible 12:30pm start.
Magic Seaweed, official forecaster for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, are calling for:
- Two pulses of swell for the weekend increasing on Saturday afternoon, peaking overnight and dropping through Sunday into Monday.
- Risk of onshore winds later in the weekend and again on Tuesday.
- Large or possibly extremely large swell for later next week with increasing risk of strong Westerly winds.
