COOLANGATTA, QLD/Australia (Monday, January 28, 2012) – The Chinese island of Hainan is set to play host to the first ASP World Tour event of 2013, the ASP 4-Star rated Hainan Classic at Riyue Bay, Wanning. The Hainan Classic is the second and final event of the 2013 Hainan Wanning Riyue Bay International Surfing Festival and will see 96 competitors from around the globe battle for precious ASP World Ranking’s points and US$95,000 prize-money.
Competition has been called on and is set to be intense featuring a stacked field of surfers the likes of – 2000 ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia (HAW), last year’s Hainan Classic event champion Glenn Hall (IRE), 2011 ASP World Junior Champion Caio Ibelli (BRA) and many more.
Dane Jordan (AUS), ASP Australasia General Manager is excited to be getting the event underway with 2 foot (1 meter) long grinding waves rolling down the left-hand pointbreak at Riyue Bay.
“It’s fantastic to be back in China for the Hainan Classic,” Jordan said. “The surf is small, but the wave shape and the length of rides out there is good. We have an impressive field of surfers including some former ASP World Champions, exciting up-and-comers and a bunch of local Chinese surfers and I’m excited to see what they can do out there.”
