Small surf, but big moves from Gabriel Medina (BRA), 19, as the Billabong Rio Pro calls another lay day.
BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Tuesday, May 14, 2013) – Continued small surf in the one-to-two foot (0.5) metre) range at Barra da Tijuca has forced event organizers to call another lay day for the Billabong Rio Pro.
Stop No. 3 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the Billabong Rio Pro completed the opening round competition on the opening day of the event window and will recommence once conditions improve.
“Groundhog day here at Barra (da Tijuca) with small surf and another lay day for men’s competition,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. “Fortunately, the event window affords us a few days of no competition for less-than-ideal conditions and we should be back on in the coming days as the new swell fills in.”
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:30am to assess conditions.
When competition resumes Taj Burrow (AUS), 34, will take on wildcard Gustavo Fernandes (BRA) Heat 1 of Round 2.
