BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio De Janeiro/Brazil (Sunday, May 12, 2013) - A lay day has been called for the Billabong Rio Pro, with only small one-to-two foot (0.5 metre) waves on offer at the Brazilian beachbreak of Barra Da Tijuca.
Stop No. 3 of 10 on the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the Billabong Rio Pro kicked off competition on the opening day of the waiting period with the completion of Round 1 and while the men’s event has been in a holding pattern the previous two days and will recommence when competition improves.
“We’ve only got small surf on offer this morning and have decided to call competition off for the day,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. “It looks like we’ll have similar conditions over the next few days, but we’re looking at a promising swell expected to arrive later this week. With that said, we’ll be back early tomorrow morning to reassess conditions for a possible restart for Round 2 of the men.”
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions.
When competition resumes Taj Burrow (AUS), 34, will take on wildcard Gustavo Fernandes (BRA) Heat 1 of Round 2.
